Absolute Value Antics!

Examine the animation below. It's related to the Absolute Value Function. Can you tell what's going on? The explanation is below the animation.

When the number 1 is added to the variable x & inside the absolute value sandwich, the "V" goes to the left; when the number 1 is subtracted from the variable x & inside the absolute value sandwich, the "V" goes to the right; when the number 1 is added to the variable x but outside the absolute value sandwich, the "V" goes upward; when the number 1 is subtracted from the variable x but outside the absolute value sandwich, the "V" goes downward!
